My Questions

About SEQuaderma skin care

What skin conditions may be helped by the products within the SEQuaderma range?

Currently there are 6 skin care solutions in the range:

How does the SEQuaderma dermatology skin care work?

All formulations utilise the award-winning Sequessome Nanotechnology® and contain Sequessome™ vesicles. These are tiny spheres made of phospholipids and can change shape in order to pass into the skin without damaging the integrity of the skin’s protection. By passing into the tissue layers below the skin, the vesicles carry pure water which hydrates and supplements the skin’s natural function. The vesicles themselves improve the peripheral lymph drainage. The lymphatic system is the network of vessels in the skin which carries away toxins and the vesicles help the lymph flush away these unwanted chemicals. In addition, the different formulations carry select ingredients to target the needs of a specific condition. These ingredients include vitamin C, zinc and peptides.

How do the SEQuaderma skin care solutions differ from each other?

All formulations contain Sequessome™ vesicles. These can change shape in order to pass into the skin without damaging the integrity of the skin’s protection1. By passing into the tissue layers below the skin, the vesicles carry pure water which hydrates and supplements the skin’s natural function and also improves lymph drainage of toxins and unwanted chemicals away from the skin.

In addition, the individual formulations may have additional ingredients to give effects related to the needs of the specific condition. The choice of ingredients and content of the different formulations have been adapted to address the specific needs of the targeted symptoms.

What are the (main) differences between SEQuaderma and other skin care products?

The main differences between the products are the platform technologies active ingredients used. The active ingredients of all products drive both the product benefits and the side effects caused.

Considering cosmetic products, unlike many of these, the SEQuaderma skin care solutions do not simply moisturise or conceal the symptoms of skin conditions, but by carrying pure water and well characterised nutrients into the tissue layers of the skin, they actually treat the symptoms.

Unlike medicines, SEQuaderma products are completely drug free and therefore do not have the side effects normally associated with drugs used to treat these skin conditions. Many of the gels, creams or antibiotics used to manage the symptoms of skin conditions have associated risks and side effects (e.g. burning or stinging of the skin) and can interact with a number of commonly used medicines (e.g. oral contraceptives, blood thinning drugs, drugs for heartburn or indigestion). Therefore, the SEQuaderma skin care solutions are suitable for everyone, regardless of any other medical conditions or medications taken.

Are the formulations of SEQuaderma skin care products the same all over the world?

All our products are produced in the same factory in Germany according to the same recipe – only the packaging is changed to accommodate different languages. Hence, the product content is identical wherever you buy it.

Why are SEQuaderma skin care products gels rather than creams or ointments?

The Sequessome™ vesicles – key to the efficacy of the SEQuaderma products need to be associated with water and the water-based gel format of these products ensures their maximum stability and performance. Gels also evaporate when exposed to the air and, as their surrounding water dries, the vesicles (and any carried key ingredients) migrate into the skin where water can be found in abundance. This critical air drying would not happen with any other product format.

Where are the SEQuaderma dermatology skin care manufactured?

The SEQuaderma products are manufactured to the highest pharmaceutical industry standards at a certified GMP factory in Germany.

Are SEQuaderma skin care products tested on animals?

The testing of cosmetics on animals in prohibited under European Legislation.

About the benefits of SEQuaderma skin care

How efficient are SEQuaderma skin care products?

The SEQuaderma products are used, and have been researched, in many different conditions. There are lots of data available which all show that using SEQuaderma helps care for the symptoms of many skin conditions. Some of the data from our studies show that:

  • Nearly 80% reported improvements in a primary or secondary symptom of rosacea after 4 weeks.2
  • The spots typical of acne prone skin were cleared by almost 100% after 3 weeks.3
  • 75% demonstrated a reduction in the severity of the typical eczema symptoms after 3 weeks.4
  • 85% demonstrated significant improvements in the typical seborrhoeic dermatitis symptoms after 3 weeks.5
  • 100% of users’ wrinkles achieved measured reductions.6 Users saw 80% to 100% improvement across all 15 tested signs of photoageing.6 80% of consumers claimed looking between 5 to 10 years younger after 8 weeks.7

How many subjects or patients have been treated with the SEQuaderma dermatology skin care?

Over 700 subjects have been treated with the SEQuaderma products in clinical and cosmetic studies. Related products with very similar formulations have, however, been proven in over 10 clinical trials and used by several thousand patients across numerous conditions.

How have the safety and efficacy of the SEQuaderma dermatology products been studied?

Unlike many devices and cosmetics, the safety and efficacy of the SEQuaderma skin care solutions have been demonstrated through multiple clinical and cosmetic studies involving over 700 subjects. These studies are further supported by an extensive programme demonstrating the excellent safety of related products based on the same technology (Sequessome Technology®).

These studies include:

  • Rosacea
    • Multicentre, randomised, placebo-controlled study comparing 4 weeks’ of SEQuaderma with vehicle (vesicle-free, placebo gel)8
    • A study of the use of SEQuaderma in 101 healthy subjects that suffer from facial redness (background and flushing) completing self-assessment after 4 weeks’ use SEQuaderma9
  • Eczema
    • A multicentre, randomised study examining 3 weeks’ treatment with SEQuaderma in 49 patients with mild-to-moderate atopic eczema, dyshidrotic hand eczema or seborrhoeic dermatitis10
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis
    • A multicentre, randomised study examining 3 weeks’ treatment with SEQuaderma in 14 patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis11
  • Acne
    • A multicentre, randomised study examining 3 weeks’ treatment with SEQuaderma in 17 patients with acne vulgaris12
    • A study comparing 3 weeks’ of SEQuaderma with placebo 224 healthy volunteers with self-assessed oily and spot-prone skin13
  • Ageing and thinning skin
    • A home-use study investigating the subjective and objective effects of 12 weeks’ treatment with SEQuaderma in 30 healthy subjects with aged wrinkled skin14
    • A home-use study assessing the efficacy and safety of SEQuaderma versus placebo or the UK market leader in healthy women with wrinkled aged skin15

All of these studies demonstrate the excellent safety of these products and – being drug free and locally applied – they can be used alongside medications.

In addition, the safety of the technology platform used within these products is demonstrated in over 10 clinical trials in multiple clinical conditions. One of the related products, Flexiseq® is used by several thousand patients with osteoarthritis (OA).

This excellent data set gives you confidence that the benefits of these products are very well understood.

Where can I find the evidence of the studies showing efficacy?

All except our most recent studies have been published in peer-review medical journals or presented at medical congresses. This means the data have been reviewed by independent experts prior to publication. You can find these articles online and there are summaries of our data available on our website

What is the longest time that anyone has been treated for with the SEQuaderma skin care products?

We have study data following 6 weeks’ treatment with SEQuaderma dermatology products. However, in addition, related products containing Sequessome™ vesicles have been used for other conditions in over 10 clinical trials up to 52 weeks and open label studies in excess of 2 years.

How long does the symptom relief last once treatment is stopped?

We do not currently have data on relapse time in all conditions, however we do know that use of these products have to be continued in order to maintain efficacy. In one study of SEQuaderma Ageing Thinning Skin, one group of subjects switched products after 8 weeks’ use, from SEQuaderma to a moisturiser. In these subjects, there was a reversal of the measured reduction in wrinkle volume and appearance back towards baseline levels by 12 weeks.16

16 A randomised home-use study in three parallel groups to assess the efficacy of two anti-ageing products. Princeton Consumer Research Report No: PROAWR1; 11 February 2015

How quickly do the SEQuaderma skin care products work?

This depends on the symptoms under consideration. Studies confirm that changes are seen in some cases (e.g. acne) as quickly as 1 week17 but other conditions may take 2–4 weeks’ treatment, with improvements increasing with continued use (up to 4 weeks). It is important to note that these products do not simply moisturise or conceal the condition but actively improve skin function and environment, which is why they do take some time to work. For SEQuaderma Ageing Thinning Skin and SEQuaderma Uneven Skin Tone, noticeable results can be obtained after just one skin cycle (4 weeks) and have been seen to continue to improve in a trial over 12 weeks (3 full skin cycles).

Many other products for these conditions have to be tried for up to 2 months before subjects can determine whether there are any benefits for them. SEQuaderma has been shown to work more quickly than this. You should consult your doctor if your condition does not improve after 3 weeks, especially if you have not already had medical advice. It is important not to miss early diagnosis of skin conditions that can progress if left untreated.

About SEQuaderma ingredients

Where can I find a list of ingredients for each product?

All ingredients are listed on the product packs. Details about these ingredients can also be found on this website.

What is in the SEQuaderma skin care products?

SEQuaderma only contains ingredients that are regularly used in foodstuffs and cosmetics. SEQuaderma is an aqueous gel which carries the Sequessome™ vesicles. These are tiny lipid spheres and their main component is phospholipids, which naturally occur within the body.

The different formulations have been adapted to address the specific needs of the targeted symptoms. This may mean that they contain additional ingredients such as vitamin C or zinc which have well understood benefits in the management of the symptoms of such skin conditions. All formulations have been developed to the same high standards.

Additional detail of the ingredients and their function can be found in the Glossary on this website.

How do the key ingredients get into the skin?

These ingredients, such as vitamin C are attached to the Sequessome™ vesicles in a way that means they are carried into the skin with the vesicles.

Are any of the constituents of the SEQuaderma skin care products known to be sensitisers?

There are no known sensitisers in the SEQuaderma formulations, however, as with any product, subjects should avoid using these products if they are aware of any previous reaction to any of the constituents.

Should I expect an allergic reaction to the use of SEQuaderma dermatology skin care?

The SEQuaderma products have been tested in studies of over 700 subjects with no allergic reactions reported. Similarly, all required skin patch testing was carried out with no issues reported. However, as for any product, you should not use SEQuaderma if you know you are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.

Why do SEQuaderma skin care products contain alcohol and will this affect my skin?

Alcohols are solvents which are needed in order for the other essential ingredients to be effectively incorporated into the formulations. The amount of alcohol in these products is kept to a minimum. However, as for any product, you should not use SEQuaderma if you know you are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.

Why do SEQuaderma skin care products have a peculiar odour?

SEQuaderma products are developed with minimised risks of skin irritation and include only ingredients essential for the stability or efficacy of the products. In order to avoid the use of artificial fragrances that may not be well tolerated by the skin, only an odour masker is added (linalool) which reduces the medicinal smell but does not have the familiar scent of many cosmetics.

Do SEQuaderma skin care products contain a Sun Protection Factor (SPF)?

No – these products do not have sun screening properties and care should always be taken to protect your skin from even mild sunlight.

Do SEQuaderma skin care products use only natural ingredients?

Our products are about delivering relief to people suffering from the symptoms of these skin conditions. The SEQuaderma products care for the skin affected by the symptoms and don’t just moisturise or conceal them. Hence, although we do use natural ingredients where possible, we do not use them at the expense of product performance. Where natural ingredients do not meet the product needs, the ingredients used are well understood and of the highest quality.

Are SEQuaderma skin care products suitable for vegetarians/vegans?

Yes – none of the ingredients in these products are derived from animals or animal products.

Why do skin care products have preservatives?

It is thanks to preservatives that face and body creams do not need to be stored in the fridge. Without preservatives, products would only last a short period of time and this could mean that their effects change or reduce.

Do the SEQuaderma dermatology products contain parabens?

Although, parabens have a negative public image, they remain effective and safe preservatives. SEQuaderma dermatology products contain ethyl and methyl parabens but not propyl and butyl parabens which have the worst public profile among the parabens. We take guidance from relevant European authorities in choosing the ingredients and their levels. Ethyl and methyl parabens are considered to be safe for use in consumer products and the levels incorporated into SEQuaderma dermatology products are substantially below the maximum limits set by the authorities.

Do the SEQuaderma dermatology products contain steroids or other drugs?

No – these products are entirely drug free and hence avoid the systemic side effects well recognised to be a concern for some drug treatments.

Does the soy listed in the components come from genetically modified (GM) crops?

Whilst every effort has been made to source materials from GM-free crops, it is not possible to certify this. The soy, however, does undergo a chemical extraction process to produce the phosphatidylcholine so is a processed derivative of the soy rather than soy itself.

Do SEQuaderma skin care products contain methylisothiazoline (MI) and why it is considered to be harmful for health?

Methylisothiazolinone, MIT, or MI, (sometimes erroneously called methylisothiazoline), is a powerful synthetic biocide and preservative within the group of isothiazolinones, which is used in numerous personal care products and a wide range of industrial applications. MI is proving to be a concern because of reported sensitization and allergic reactions as well as cell and nerve damage. SEQuaderma products do not contain MI.

How should SEQuaderma dermatology skin care products be used?

How should I apply the SEQuaderma skin care products?

  • Thinly spread a suitable amount over the affected area twice daily and leave until it is touch-dry, avoiding applying creams, topical medications, other SEQuaderma products or make-up until dry. Do not rub in - SEQuaderma is different – the gel has to dry to create the environment that allows the tiny lipid spheres in the gel to cross the skin into the tissue below. If necessary, any residue can be wiped off.
  • Avoid getting the products in the eyes, but if this does happen, rinse with plenty of cold water.
  • Do not use if hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.

Do I have to wipe off any residue after application?

After a couple of minutes and once the gel has dried, there may be a little residue on the skin. You do not have to wipe this off, but some people prefer to do so prior to applying make-up or other skin products.

What should I do if the product is applied incorrectly?

If too much gel has been applied – there are no safety issues, it will simply take longer to dry. You can wipe off excess gel and apply less next time.

If gel has entered the eyes. If gel does enter the eyes, they should be rinsed with plenty of cold water. If excessive stinging/symptoms occur, please consult a pharmacist or doctor. As with most topical treatments, you should avoid allowing the gel to enter the eyes.

If gel has been swallowed – whilst not advisable it should not cause major problems. As with other medical products, care should be taken to store it out of the reach of children. As with all treatments, if you have any concerns, please consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Do I need to apply the SEQuaderma dermatology products every day or can I use it, for example, every other day?

We have no data on any other treatment regimen other than twice daily and this is the recommended regimen.

Do I need to continue to use SEQuaderma skin care products once skin conditions symptoms improve?

Yes. Although we have not got data on relapse time in all conditions, we do know that treatment with these products has to be continued in order to maintain efficacy. In one study of SEQuaderma Ageing Thinning Skin one group of subjects switched treatments after 8 weeks use of SEQuaderma to a moisturiser. In these subjects, there was a reversal of the measured reduction in wrinkle volume and appearance back towards baseline levels by 12 weeks.

How long should I continue using SEQuaderma skin care once I have seen improvement?

This is a product that you should continue to use, even once improvements have been seen as the skin is constantly renewing and repairing. SEQuaderma works by delivering hydration and other proven ingredients into the skin, thus rejuvenating the skin barrier and supporting the skin’s own repair mechanisms. Hence, it continuously cares for skin and needs to be applied every day.

I haven’t seen any improvement after using SEQuaderma skin care product – why?

No treatment will work for everyone. However, before it is assumed that you are one of those for whom the treatment does not work, please check that:

  • You are applying the product correctly – the product will not be effective if under-dosed or if you are covering the treated area too soon.
  • The treatment has been ongoing for long enough for an effect to be seen (we recommend 4 weeks although an effect will usually be seen sooner; in some people it may take longer).
  • The symptoms being treated are caused by a relevant skin condition and not something else.

If you are using the gel correctly and not achieving any benefit, then unfortunately it may simply not be the treatment for you.

Can I use SEQuaderma skin care products on my body?

The product can be used on affected skin of the face and body. Avoid contact with eyes and genitals. In case of contact, rinse thoroughly with cold water. Don’t use these products on open wounds, broken or infected skin or mucous membranes (the lining of the openings of the body, such as the mouth, nose or eyes).

Can I use SEQuaderma skin care alongside other cosmetic products (as part of my regular beauty routine) and under make-up?

SEQuaderma dermatology products can be used alongside other cosmetic and medicated products, as long as they are not applied at exactly the same time to the same skin. SEQuaderma should be applied first and up to 5 minutes should be allowed between applications. This window allows the skin caring ingredients of SEQuaderma to be taken into the skin unaffected by the second application.

After application of SEQuaderma, if necessary any residue can be wiped off and users can then continue with their normal skin routine and make-up.

Can I use more than one SEQuaderma skin care product at the same time and if so, how should I apply them?

Yes –more than one SEQuaderma product can be used if your symptoms suggest this might be useful. As with any other topical application (make-up, moisturisers or regular skin care products), up to 5 minutes should be left between applications and if necessary any residue can wiped off between applications. This window allows the skin caring ingredients of SEQuaderma to be taken into the skin unaffected by the second application. When using two SEQuaderma products, it does not matter which is used first.
